The agency is also looking to strengthen its enforcement against scammers.
The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has requested public feedback on a proposed rule that would prohibit individual impersonation, expanding on a recent rule targeting government and business impersonation. This measure is in response to emerging technologies such as AI-generated deepfakes.
“Fraudsters are using AI tools to impersonate individuals with eerie precision and at a much wider scale. With voice cloning and other AI-driven scams on the rise, protecting Americans from impersonator fraud is more critical than ever,” said FTC Chair Lina Khan. “Our proposed expansions to the final impersonation rule would do just that, strengthening the FTC’s toolkit to address AI-enabled scams impersonating individuals.”
The FTC has also finalized the Government and Business Impersonation Rule enabling the agency to pursue federal court cases directly against scammers and to reclaim funds acquired through government or business impersonation schemes.
